A few thoughts on the illustrious Newbery Medal Winners, from 1922 til now. The idea was to produce an award which would give librarians the opportunity to recognize American authors producing âoriginal creative work in the field of books for children.â It was Melcher who also suggested that the award be named after John Newbery (1713â1767).
